Midlife Crisis In Two Parts

Part One: Hair Extensions

So, I've been keeping a secret. A few, really. I've been taking some supplements to help with hormone levels and energy levels, and it's really changed my life the last year or so and allowed me to feel like myself again.

But.

The changing/adjusting hormone levels made my hair fall out. Not just the "Oh gross, l've created another hair ball in the shower" type, but the balding type.

Yeah. Bald patches.

So for about one day I decided to stop taking the medicine. Because I am at least half vain. Then I realized that was ridiculous. So I decided to do another ridiculous thing. Can't you just see the excellent logical thinking I have! I decided to get hair extensions.

And so I did. They are super long and I love them and hate them. I'd love to answer any questions you may have about them in the comments. That is the end of Part One.

Part Two: NYC

This isn't a secret! I am headed to NYC early, early Saturday morning to spend a week with two girlfriends. I am ecstatic. I keep thinking of that saying: She turned her can'ts into cans, and her dreams into plans. It's taken a lot of work and saving and patience, but it is happening!

And what better way to celebrate than with another completely ridiculous post about what I'll be wearing. It's my midlife crisis. I can do what I want.
1. Saturday: Plane ride. Hot pink Isle Esme shirt. Something book-related seemed appropriate since we are headed to the world's largest publishing expo for a few days.

2. Sunday: Church, then the Met, the Moma and the NYC Public Library.

3. Every day: Running. Would you be brave enough to run alone in central park?

4. Monday: Bike riding, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge at sunset.

5. Tuesday: BEA! and the Teen Author Carnival. Hoping to pick up an ARC of Ally Condie's REACHED, Maggie Steivater's THE RAVEN BOYS, and of course, Shannon Hale's PALACE OF STONE.

6. Wednesday: more BEA shenanigans. Meeting John Scalzi, Jerry Spinelli, and Libba Bray.
7. Wednesday Night: BOOK OF MORMON MUSICAL. Okay, I might be more excited about this than anything else. Orchestra seats. Fourth Row. Sparkling/sequins dress that I never wear anywhere.

8. Thursday: Go Yankees! I know almost nothing about pro baseball, but I'm going to a game and so naturally I'm wearing my FDNY shirt. Totally makes sense, right? Also, these are maternity pants. I predict this will become the new hipster trend as soon as the loaded diaper/harem pants phase out.

9. Friday: No idea. Perhaps we should get a plan together? Regardless, I kind of want to wear my cowgirl-ish boots in the city. What should we do Friday? Eat ourselves sick?

10. Saturday: Plane ride home, in my hippie dress of course.

Please pray for us that we don't get mugged, lost, or too much rain.

I'll be documenting my travels on Instagram. My username is rachelandcompany. Peace out.

  1. You make me smile!! (One of those super goofy grin types.) I'm so happy that you are documenting and I get to enjoy it while I'm so far away. :) Love the outfits and I'm totally jealous of the baseball game, BEA, and your super cute style (and beautiful new locks!).
    Also, your dresser? ADORE!

  2. Awesome that you get to meet Libba Bray! I love that Victorian series with the sorceresses. (I know one of the books is Rebel Angels but it's 4 a.m., I'm feeding the baby and way too tired/lazy to go look for the others.) Also, BOO Yankees. As for me and my house, we will serve the other evil empire. (The Red Sox) Have so much fun! I can't wait to see pictures.

  3. First, I love your hair! It looks great, and really does a woman ever need an excuse to make herself feel good? I didn't think so. Second, NYC sounds like a blast! And if you do feel the need to go running alone pack along a billy club, some pepper spray, and a taser... just to be safe! And if you manage to snag any extra ARC books my address is... Have a great time!

  4. I love your hair! It's gorgeous. But, I do have bad news for you. Ally said that there are no ARCs of Reached at BEA or anywhere. I'm sorry to dash your hopes and dreams. I just wanted you to be prepared. :D

I hope you have so much fun in NYC! You deserve it!!!

  5. I had extensions once. They were a lot of work, but for a few glorious weeks I had movie star hair.

I'm glad that Jenni has already burst the "no REACHED ARC's" bubble so that I don't have to.

But, I'm hoping to see you around in NYC! I'm flying out Friday evening, so maybe we could do something during the day?

  6. Love the hair extensions & hooray for you for doing it! You deserved it & you look fabulous. I mean, you'd look fabulous in a trashbag and bald but that's just because you ROCK!

And I can not wait to hear all about NY and all your adventures. I'll have to join you someday when I stop birthing these sweet babies of mine (next year I hope!) And I love the self poriots! (see isn't it fun?) And love your outfits- especially the Isle Esme shirt!

  12. I am loving your skinny yellow belt! It makes outfit #2 my favorite.

And I love your hair in #7 with your sequin dress. Well, and I love that you got extensions in the first place! I mean, I really cannot think of a better time to get extensions. I don't think a woman wanting to have nice hair is vanity, I think it is part of being comely.

And I'm so vicariously excited for you to be at BEA! I was at my graphic novel book club meeting (the one that takes place here at the top-ranked grad school for library science). One of them said that when she learned about ALA she decided to become a librarian. So then I was like "Oh yeah! And BEA! My friend is going this year. She's an author, unpublished, but she's written books, you know what I mean." They knew. You can bet I'll be watching your instagram feed.

p.s. aren't hormones the craziest? I was a teen when my mom had some wacky hormone changes. She's like "everyone preps you really well for puberty, but they don't mention this 'pre-menopause' stuff! They should warn women about this!"

I love them!) and love the outfits, which of course you can pull of beautifully because you are so freaking skinny. I need to stop porking out and feeding my midlife crisis right to my poor jiggly thighs. Have fun and be safe! can't wait to hear all about it!
